Can anyone tell me why John Edwards is called faggot?

Apparantly Ann Coulter attempted to call him so and now she's asked to appoligize, but my question is, why did that happen at the first place? I mean, she sort of single out Edwards for the f-word, and the audience seems very enthusiastic about it, like they all know something. Am I missing somethine here?
